Description

Chic Clicks is the first publication addressing the conflict between artistic claims and commercial reality in fashion photography. 40 renowned photographers present free, unpublished works and commissions published in fashion magazines; five essays discuss fashion photography in its cultural and social significance. Chic Clicks both features private, experimental shots by photographers who made their names with fashion photographs and fashion pictures by photographers who first became known for their artistic work and, consequently, received commissions from fashion magazines and firms. The results – amazing contrasts and fascinating parallels – once more question the hierarchy of high and popular culture. Does fashion photography in magazines today have the same cultural impact and significance as photographs on the wall of a museum? Does the representation of the human figure in fashion photography offer clichés or progressive interpretations of our sexuality? Which picture can presently be considered “free”? Chic Clicks raises these questions utilizing impressively provocative imagery.

The photographers: Fred Aufray, Laetitia Benat, Anuschka Blommers & Niels Schumm, Koto Bolofo, Mark Borthwick, Jean-François Carly, Alex Cayley, Banu Cennetoglu, Donald Christie, Philippe Cometti, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Corinne Day, Horst Diekgerdes, Anders Edström, Alexei Hay, Takashi Homma, Mikael Jansson, Marcelo Krasilcic, Christophe Kutner, Tom Lingnau und Frank Schumacher, Glen Luchford, Richard Prince, Dmon Prunner, Blaise Reuterswärd, Terry Richardson, Satoshi Saikusa, Jimo Salako, Luis Sanchis, Collier Schorr, Cindy Sherman, David Sims, Antonio Spinoza, Larry Sultan, Iké Udé, Javier Vallhonrat, Jonathan de Villiers, Matthias Vriens, Erwin Wurm.
